Use the internet to find the answers to the following questions, in one or two sentences.
Summarise your answers into your own words. Include web references.

v  Name two search engines. Describe their benefits and suggest how you could use this search engine to obtain product information and technical support.
·         Google
                                                               i.      Google is the most used and most trusted search engine on the web.
                                                             ii.      It is free to use and organises search results in order of the popularity of the results.
                                                            iii.      It has the ability for image searches as well as articles and even government documents.
                                                           iv.      It also has its own calculator, dictionary and spellcheck.

v  What is a URL?

·         A URL, or “Uniform Resource Locator”, is a string of formatted text that is used by web browsers to obtain information and view a website.

v  What is HTML?

·         HTML, or “Hypertext Markup Language” is a type of code that is used to create webpages.

v  What is shareware?

·         A term used for software that is available free of charge for a limited time (trial use) after which the creator of the software may start to charge for use.

v  What is a zip file?

·         A zip file is used to compress files to make them smaller in file size. This is most commonly used when larger files need to be e-mailed.

v  Approximately how long would it take to download a hundred megabytes (100mB) of data at Broadband speed?

·         It should take roughly 8-10 minutes to download 100mb of data using Broadband speed.

v  What are cookies?

·         Cookies are small files of information stored within the computer that hold information about websites you’ve viewed, forms you’ve filled in online and some other things.


v  What is FTP?

·         FTP, or ‘File Transfer Protocol’, is used to “transfer files from one host to another host over a TCP-based network, such as the Internet”.

v  When should you scan for viruses?
·         If you use the internet fairly regularly, you should do scans every few days, and you should do a full scan at least once every one to two weeks. You should also definitely scan for viruses if you've accidentally accessed an unfamiliar or risky site.

v  Who owns copyright on the types of data you retrieve?
·         The copyright is owned by the creator of the work; such as designers, authors, illustrators, etc.

v  What is the difference between Java and Javascript?
·         Javascript is a scripting language that is used to create interactive webpages.
·         Java is a programming language that is used to create standalone programs. 

v  Name some online tools.

·         Google Drive

·         Google News

v  List the devices are available to view websites.

·         iPads
·         iPod Touches

v  Describe the importance of privacy and security measures related to online tasks.
·         It is important to not provide random websites and people on the internet with your personal information; such as bank details, age, full name and address. They can use that information to steal money from your bank, come to your house or even stalk you.
·         Keep passwords secure and don’t give them out to anyone.
·         Since technology is a large part of our lives now and people are using it at a much younger age, it would be a good idea for parents/teachers to teach kids about how to be safe online and the dos and don’ts.

v  What information would you refuse to provide when filling out a form on a web page?

·         I’d refuse to provide my bank details, address or full name unless it was a webpage I trusted.
